Update: Collegiate VALORANT Hub have decided to cancel the first two qualifier events for Summer Showdown. There will now be only two qualifier events, with four teams from each qualifier advancing to the final event. The article has been updated to reflect those changes.
Collegiate VALORANT Hub and Texas A&M University (TAMU) are teaming up to host an online collegiate summer series called Summer Showdown. There will be two qualifiers held throughout July, with the finals hosted from August 2nd through August 4th. The finals will feature a $3,000 prize pool for the top placing teams.
This will be the second iteration of the Summer Showdown. The inaugural event took place last summer, with Northwood University taking home the win.
The Collegiate VALORANT Hub announced the following qualifier event dates on X:
- Qualifier #1 – July 19th-21st
- Qualifier #2 – July 26th-28th
The previous years’ qualifiers have consisted of Round Robin pools leading into a tournament bracket. The top placing teams advanced to the final event where they competed in a double-elimination bracket.
Last year, the first two qualifiers ended with three teams each making the finals. A Last Chance Qualifier saw the remaining two teams make the final event.
This year, there will be only two qualifying events. This means that four teams from each qualifier event will advance to the finals in August.
The Favorites for Summer Showdown
While pools for the first qualifier event have not been published, many strong VALORANT collegiate programs are likely to compete. While teams have not publicly announced their participation, we can speculate on which schools will likely to contend for the championship.
This collaboration between Collegiate VALORANT Hub and TAMU comes on the back of TAMU winning the CVAL 2024 Championships a few weeks ago. Coming off their victory, they’re favorites to make a deep run in the final bracket.
Last year’s winners, Northwood University, certainly have a case to make for repeating. They won the CVAL 2024 North – Spring Tournament to qualify for the CVAL 2024 Championships. If they compete, they’ll be looking to avenge their upset first round loss in the CVAL 2024 Championships to the University of St. Thomas.
Speaking of St. Thomas, they’re another favorite to win the entire competition. They made an incredible run in the CVAL 2024 Championships despite being expected to lose in the first round. They too will have another chance at redemption.
There are plenty of other strong collegiate VALORANT teams likely to compete. With qualifiers spread out over all of July, there’s sure to be exciting rivalries and upsets for weeks to come. But at the end of it all, only one team will be able to call themselves summer champions!
