College Call of Duty is back after rough esports winter layoffs.
College Call of Duty is back for the 2024 season, joining the NECC after its future was called into question earlier this fall.
In their announcement blog post, the organization shared: “College CoD is joining the NECC under the leadership of Jacen ‘sonofpaint’ Garriss,” the blog stated. “We’re incredibly grateful to continue operating events and competition with the support of the NECC.”

September 2023: eFuse lays off College Call of Duty staff in restructuring
eFuse acquired the organization in Fall 2021 and operated just X seasons before closing College Call of Duty operations in September 2023.
The 2024 season announcement comes just three months after the organization announced that they were canceling their Summer Open and College Warzone events.
Community members reacted to the news with broken heart emojis and “o7”, the community’s signature saluting emote.
Members of the College Call of Duty staff found themselves without a job in the September layoffs at eFuse, following the disastrous launch of “Creator League”, an esports tournament system featuring eight influencers that may or may not include NFTs.
“Found out today, I’m also among the layoffs at @eFuse. 5 years of @CollegeCoD. It was a good run; I don’t regret a moment of it. Shoutout to every member of the CCL team, would work with any of them in a heartbeat. That said, I’m LFW, contract or Full-time. DM me for resume,” wrote Jacen “sonofpaint” Gariss, head of the College Call of Duty organization.
HeatVW, another College Call of Duty admin wrote, “After almost 2 years I was laid off from @eFuse today. I am LFW in Team Operations, Project Management, and primarily Tournament Organization. I have 5 years of experience working across College VALORANT, College CoD, and Influencer events. Open to contract or full time.”
College Call of Duty 2024 Registration
Registration for College Call of Duty 2024 Spring season opened on January 11, 2024 and saw the return of entry fees, with $300 for Premier Teams and $200 for Open Teams.
The reactions to the entry fees were mixed:
The organization explained the reason behind the return of the entry fees: “We’ve realized that operating a league of this scale solely on revenue from sources like sponsors is not feasible. As a result, entry fees have become necessary to continue operations.”
